Cold-flow properties (cloud point, CFPP)
Cold-flow properties describe how well fuel flows at low temperature, measured by cloud point and CFPP among others; palm-rich biodiesel tends to gel more easily.
Cloud point is the temperature at which the first crystals appear and the fuel looks hazy; CFPP (Cold Filter Plugging Point) is the lowest temperature at which fuel still passes through a filter. Palm biodiesel is rich in saturated fatty acids and so crystallises sooner in the cold.
In tropical Indonesia this is rarely a problem, but it matters at altitude and for exports to cold-winter countries. Saturated monoglycerides are one cause of filter plugging.
