FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester)
FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) is the chemical compound that makes up first-generation biodiesel, blended into diesel under Indonesia's B40 and B50 programmes.
FAME forms when triglycerides in vegetable oil react with methanol (transesterification). Because the molecule still contains oxygen, it behaves differently from fossil diesel, with a higher pour point and lower oxidation stability, among other things.
This is why blend levels are raised in steps and controlled by quality specifications such as SNI 7182:2024, monoglycerides, water content and cold-flow properties.
FAME differs from HVO, which is a pure hydrocarbon. See the comparison in Biodiesel vs HVO vs SAF.
