Water content & sludge

Water content and sludge are biodiesel cleanliness parameters; water promotes microbes, corrosion and sediment (sludge) that clog filters. The reported water limit for B50 is a maximum of 300 ppm.

Biodiesel is hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs moisture. Free water at the tank bottom promotes microbial growth, corrosion and sediment, so good housekeeping such as draining tank bottoms and changing filters on schedule is strongly advised.

The water limit was reported to fall to a maximum of 300 ppm for B50. BRIN has also warned about water storage risk in B50. See oxidation stability and quality standards.
