Glycerol (glycerine)
Glycerol is the by-product of biodiesel production formed during transesterification, which can be purified for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food and other industries.
Every batch of FAME yields crude glycerol that is still mixed with methanol and catalyst. The crude glycerol is then purified to make it saleable.
Free and total glycerol in biodiesel are limited by quality specifications because residual glycerol can cause deposits and clogging. See transesterification.
