Methanol
Methanol is a simple alcohol reacted with vegetable oil in transesterification to make FAME biodiesel.
Methanol is the reagent that reacts with oil such as CPO along with an alkaline catalyst. Surplus methanol is recovered and reused, and must be almost absent in the final product because it affects quality and safety.
Methanol is a notable cost component of FAME production alongside the palm feedstock. See transesterification.
