HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) / green diesel
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), also called green diesel or renewable diesel, is a hydrocarbon fuel made by hydrotreating vegetable oil, chemically close to fossil diesel and usable without engine modification.
HVO is made by reacting vegetable oil with high-pressure hydrogen over a catalyst, which removes oxygen. The result is a drop-in fuel that stores well and has a high cetane number, but it needs a dedicated refinery, hydrogen and far more investment than a FAME plant.
Pertamina is developing HVO through green refineries at Cilacap and Dumai (Pertamina Renewable Diesel). Decree 113/2026 also lists diesel bio-hydrocarbons in the biofuel phasing. Full comparison: Biodiesel vs HVO vs SAF.
