Co-processing
Co-processing is refining vegetable oil or other renewable feedstock together with crude oil in an existing refinery to produce fuel with renewable content, without building a new plant.
The method uses a refinery's existing hydroprocessing units, so investment is lower than for a dedicated HVO plant, but the renewable share is usually kept to a small percentage to protect the units and product quality.
The technique is also discussed for SAF and renewable diesel. Pertamina's Bioavtur J2.4 at the Cilacap refinery contains 2.4% bio-content. See Biodiesel vs HVO vs SAF.
