SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) / bio-jet
SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), or bio-jet fuel, is aircraft fuel from renewable sources blended with fossil jet fuel to reduce aviation emissions.
Pertamina developed Bioavtur J2.4 at the Cilacap refinery with 2.4% bio-content from refined palm kernel oil (RBDPKO); a Garuda Indonesia test flight took place on 4 October 2023. Pertamina is also preparing used cooking oil (UCO) as feedstock.
The phasing in Energy Ministry Decree 113.K/EK.05/MEM.E/2026 lists 1% bio-jet in 2027 (initially at Soekarno-Hatta and Ngurah Rai airports) and 5% in 2029-2030. No separate technical rules or sanctions had been found as of July 2026. Its production is similar to HVO.
