Degraded land
Degraded land is land that has lost forest cover or productivity, now proposed by the government as a feedstock source for biodiesel so that primary forest is not cleared.
On 7 October 2026 Presidential Special Envoy Hashim Djojohadikusumo cited about 12.7 million hectares of damaged forest that could be used to expand biodiesel from B50 to B100. This is a direction and a hope, not regulation, and B100 is not policy.
Definitions and figures are not uniform: national critical land is about 12.3 million hectares (2024 data), and a CIFOR-ICRAF study cited by Katadata judged about 3.5 million hectares suitable for non-palm oil crops. The Clean Transition Coalition estimates B50 could require about 5.36 million additional hectares of palm by 2039.
