RED II / RED III (Renewable Energy Directive)
The RED (Renewable Energy Directive) is the EU directive on renewable energy; RED II and RED III contain biofuel sustainability criteria that affect palm biodiesel exports.
RED II (Directive (EU) 2018/2001) classifies biofuels from feedstocks with high indirect land-use change (ILUC) risk, including palm oil, and phases out their contribution to EU targets. RED III (Directive (EU) 2023/2413) raises the EU renewable energy target.
These rules are often discussed in the context of Indonesia-EU palm trade, together with the EUDR. Related: RSPO, ISPO.
