Prabowo's Inauguration Speech Links Energy Self-Sufficiency to Palm Oil
Prabowo made energy self-sufficiency a priority and identified palm oil as a diesel source, while a B50 target had been discussed before his inauguration.

Jakarta — President Prabowo Subianto made energy self-sufficiency one of the central ambitions of his administration in his inauguration speech on 20 October 2024. He said Indonesia should be able to meet its own energy needs and identified oil palm as one of the crops that could produce fuel, including renewable diesel substitutes. The speech provided a political foundation for expanding domestic bioenergy, while a B50 biodiesel blend had already been mentioned in Prabowo's agenda before he took office.
Energy self-sufficiency enters the government's opening agenda
In his speech after taking the presidential oath, Prabowo said Indonesia must pursue self-sufficiency in both food and energy. Reuters reported that he aimed for the country to meet its own food needs within four to five years and argued that Indonesia could achieve energy self-sufficiency by using domestic resources.
Prabowo listed several possible sources, including geothermal energy, coal, hydropower and crops that could be processed into fuel. He specifically said oil palm could produce diesel. The statement matters for the biodiesel industry because Indonesia has built a mandatory palm-based biodiesel blending programme as an instrument for reducing the use of fossil diesel.
The inauguration speech did not state a B50 percentage explicitly. Energy self-sufficiency and B50 should therefore be treated separately: self-sufficiency was the policy objective set out in the speech, while B50 was one possible instrument that had previously appeared in Prabowo's energy-transition agenda.
The B50 target was mentioned before the inauguration
In April 2024, Bisnis Indonesia reported Prabowo's plan to introduce B50 biodiesel and E10 bioethanol by 2029. B50 is a blend of 50% fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and 50% petroleum diesel. Indonesia was still implementing its B35 mandate at the time of the inauguration, meaning that a move to B50 would require a government decision, technical testing, adequate supply and a financing arrangement.
The direction strengthened palm oil's role not only as a food and export commodity, but also as a domestic energy feedstock. A higher blend alone, however, would not guarantee self-sufficiency. The outcome would still depend on national diesel demand, biodiesel production, blending and distribution capacity, fuel quality and the availability of funds to cover the price gap between biodiesel and fossil diesel.
What it meant for palm oil and biodiesel
If translated into a higher blending mandate, the policy could raise domestic demand for palm oil. That would potentially reduce the volume available for export and tighten the relationship between energy policy, crude palm oil prices, fresh fruit bunch prices and export earnings. On inauguration day, the speech did not provide a B50 volume, timetable or implementation mechanism.
For biodiesel producers, the political signal was clear: the incoming government placed energy security among its priorities and regarded palm oil as one of Indonesia's domestic fuel resources. The next step would be operational policy—including fuel specifications, vehicle-test results, producer allocations, fuel-terminal readiness and the incentive design—before B50 could be considered ready for implementation.
The 20 October 2024 speech was therefore a statement of direction, not a technical B50 decision. It linked energy self-sufficiency with the potential of palm oil, while a 50% blend still required its own rules and implementation stages.
