Palm Oil Rebounds on October 20 as Exports Rise; B50 Already Underway

Malaysian palm oil futures rose amid early-October export reports, but September stocks remained high and Indonesia's B50 mandate was already in effect.

Jakarta — Malaysian crude palm oil (CPO) futures rose on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, amid stronger reported export shipments and interest in biodiesel demand. IDXChannel reported a 1.24% gain to MYR 4,825 per tonne at 14:20 Jakarta time. That intraday quote does not establish a sustained rally: Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) data show total palm oil stocks of 3,510,897 tonnes in September.

Early-October shipments support sentiment

According to IDXChannel, cargo surveyors estimated Malaysian palm oil shipments in the first half of October to be 43.2%–58.3% higher than the comparable previous-month period. This is a partial-month shipment estimate, not a final October export tally. The report also cited expected Indian festival-season demand and firmer vegetable oil prices in China as market considerations. Neither factor guarantees a particular closing price or subsequent trend.

The MYR 4,825 figure is a snapshot of a Malaysian futures contract at a specified time, not an Indonesian physical CPO price or a price paid for fresh fruit bunches (FFB). Contract type, time and unit matter when comparing market quotations. The site's CPO price page offers domestic and international series that should be read separately.

Official stock data provide a counterweight

MPOB recorded total Malaysian palm oil stocks of 3,510,897 tonnes in September, up 24.54% from the previous month. Within that total, crude palm oil stocks were 2,163,173 tonnes and processed palm oil stocks 1,347,724 tonnes. Describing the full 3.51 million tonnes as crude palm oil would therefore conflate distinct categories. MPOB reported September palm oil exports of 1,120,395 tonnes, down 12.13% month on month.

September's official full-month figures and surveyors' first-half October shipment estimates cover different periods and methodologies. Higher early-October shipments may encourage buyers, while substantial existing stocks can limit price gains if supply is not absorbed. Neither data series alone resolves the balance for October as a whole.

B50 is in effect, not awaiting launch

IDXChannel listed the prospect of higher biodiesel consumption among market supports. The policy's status needs precision: Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) said B50 fuel began distribution on 1 July 2026 and the mandatory programme was launched on 9 July. By 20 October, the question was its actual uptake and its interaction with export supply, not whether B50 had yet been introduced.

In July, ESDM projected CPO requirements for B50 of roughly 15.2–16.3 million tonnes. That is a programme forecast rather than a measured incremental increase in demand, and it does not prove that B50 caused the entire one-day futures rise. ESDM reported that 6,050 of 6,412 filling stations had received B50 by mid-September, with some terminals still transitioning. Distribution coverage should not be mistaken for a verified annual consumption total.

What it means for Indonesia

A firmer international palm oil market can affect export receipts and biodiesel feedstock costs, but the effect on FFB prices varies by location and timing. The implications should be assessed using comparable futures and physical price data alongside realised B50 consumption. A single rebound session is not a guarantee of higher income for producers or growers.
