Indonesia has raised the share of palm-based biodiesel (FAME) that must be blended into diesel from 2.5% in 2008 to 50% (B50) on 1 July 2026, with B60 under study for 2027. Actual biodiesel use grew from 0.4 million kL in 2011 to 14.2 million kL in 2025.

What the volumes show

  • B20 (2016) and its expansion to non-subsidised sectors in 2018 set off strong growth.
  • B30 from 2020: 8.5 million kL distributed in 2020.
  • 2025 under B40: 14.2 million kL distributed.

Why it matters

Each step up in the blend raises domestic demand for FAME and therefore for crude palm oil, which affects export volumes, palm prices and the BPDP fund that covers the price gap for subsidised volumes. That is why the step from B50 to B60 is being studied carefully, including options that mix FAME with other biofuels such as HVO.
