Jakarta — Malaysia's benchmark crude palm oil (CPO) futures for January 2027 delivery closed at MYR 4,258 a tonne on Friday, 6 November 2026, down MYR 119 or 2.72% on the previous session. Reuters, carried by Business Recorder, and Bernama reported the same closing level. Reuters put the weekly fall at 9.04%, the steepest since mid-December 2024. This Malaysian futures quote is not an Indonesian fresh fruit bunch (FFB) price or the monthly biodiesel market index price (HIP).
Friday's steep close
Reuters said the January benchmark reached its lowest close since 5 March. Its early-Friday report had quoted MYR 4,363 a tonne, a figure from trading before the market closed. The early quote and MYR 4,258 closing price describe different points in the session, not conflicting final settlements. Anyone using the data for business decisions needs to check both the delivery month and the time of the quote.
Bernama reported that the November 2026 contract ended at MYR 4,049, December at MYR 4,147 and February 2027 at MYR 4,356. Each delivery month has a different price. Bernama's MYR 4,100-a-tonne physical November South CPO quotation is a physical-market price, not the January futures close. Reuters cited weaker soybean oil as pressure on palm oil; Bernama also reported caution ahead of Malaysia's official supply-and-demand figures.
According to Reuters, Dalian's most-active soybean oil contract fell 1.41%, while its palm oil contract lost 2.41% at the time of the report. Trader David Ng of Iceberg X Sdn Bhd, cited by both news agencies, pointed to weakness in competing vegetable oils. His comments are a market participant's interpretation rather than proof that one factor alone explains every part of the CPO move.
Official inventory data still pending
Bernama said traders were awaiting the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) report on October supply and demand, scheduled for 10 November. Concern about elevated stocks must not be presented as an official October inventory figure before that release. Bernama also reported that Bursa Malaysia will close on Monday, 9 November, for the Deepavali replacement holiday; a new regular-session close should not be assumed for that day.
The Friday decline followed an earlier fall covered by Media Biodiesel. Reuters and Bernama had differed by MYR 2 on Thursday's January closing price, reporting MYR 4,375 and MYR 4,377 respectively. Both reported MYR 4,258 for Friday. The MYR 119 daily fall uses Bernama's Thursday baseline; keeping those sources distinct avoids giving the impression that this article independently audited exchange settlement records.
What it means for Indonesia
Indonesia produces and exports palm oil and uses it to make biodiesel, so regional benchmark moves matter to participants across the palm and biofuel chain. But a January futures close in Malaysia does not directly reset Indonesia's FFB price determinations, physical CPO tenders or the monthly biodiesel HIP. These indicators reflect different markets, periods and pricing mechanisms.
Editorial analysis: a steep futures decline makes careful comparison of indicators more important; it is not, on its own, a forecast for B50 programme costs or farmers' income. The forthcoming MPOB release should provide an official basis for assessing Malaysia's inventories. Until then, market concern about stocks should remain separate from verified stock data.
